When breast conservation surgery is performed to remove breast cancer such as in a lumpectomy, it can leave the breast “deformed”. To correct this, oncoplastic surgery is done at the same time as the removal of the tumor, to restore the breast to a more natural appearance. The other breast may also be surgically modified for symmetry. This procedure may be done either at the same time or at a later date, when the post-surgical swelling has resolved, to provide the most accurate symmetrical reduction or augmentation of the unaffected breast. Many times this surgery is done in coordination with a Plastic Surgeon to facilitate the best cosmetic outcome. Having oncoplastic surgery the same time as a lumpectomy or partial mastectomy has benefits, such as:

  • Symmetrical breasts
  • Only one surgery
  • Improved confidence
  • Improves problems related with large breasts
  • Reduces risk of problems from radiation therapy

This procedure can give breast cancer patients more confidence after surgery. To learn more about oncoplastic surgery and other breast treatments available here at TOA Surgical Specialists, contact us at our office locations today.
