Treatment for a Ruptured or Torn Achilles Tendon

Non-Surgical Treatment

Non-surgical treatment for completely torn achilles tendons involve immobilizing the ankle with a cast or a boot while the tendon heals. At first the ankle is immobilized with the foot facing downward, which brings the ends of the tendon closer together. Over time, the foot is slowly brought more upright to a normal position. Physical therapy is performed to gently stretch the tendon and strengthen it while protecting during the healing process.

Repair of Ruptured Achilles Tendon

Surgical options involve stitching the torn tendon back together. This can be accomplished with a longer incision over the tear site or with smaller incisions. Our surgeons are leading specialists in minimally invasive surgery, which can mean a quicker recovery, enabling you to get back to your daily activities as soon as safely possible.

We will be glad to discuss the various treatment options to develop the treatment plan that is the best option for you.

Achilles reconstruction

In more severe cases, especially when a significant amount of time has passed since the tear has occurred, surgery is needed to reconstruct the torn achilles.

While there are several different surgical methods, in general, your orthopedic surgeon connects the torn ends of the tendon using additional tendon tissue (either from one of your other tendons or a donor) that is stitched to the torn ends. This usually involves an incision on the back of the lower leg. In many cases, this can be performed as an outpatient procedure.

At EmergeOrtho, we guide our patients through the complete recovery process, combining advanced medical technology with the skills of our board-certified and board-eligible providers. Whether your injury is treated with nonsurgical or surgical intervention, we welcome the opportunity to serve you.
