Deren Bagsby, MD

Primary Specialty:
Hip and Knee Replacement Surgery

Dr. Deren Bagsby is a native of Cincinnati, completing his undergraduate degree at Hanover College, before receiving a Masters in Biology from Purdue University, both in Indiana.  He then went on to complete his medical school training at Indiana University in Indianapolis, where he was elected to the prestigious Alpha Omega Alpha medical honor society.  Also, he completed his residency in Orthopedic Surgery at Indiana University, where he trained in multiple aspects of orthopedic surgery, with a specific interest in fracture care and total joint replacement.

During his time at Indiana University, he authored over a dozen peer review publications and has presented at multiple national meetings. Dr. Bagsby continued his training by completing an Adult Reconstruction Fellowship at Norton Hospital in Louisville Kentucky, becoming an expert in primary and revision hip and knee replacement. During his fellowship, he completed over 400 primary total hip replacements through the revolutionary, muscle sparing direct anterior approach. This approach utilizes an incision on the front of the hip that allows the joint to be replaced by moving muscles aside along their natural tissue planes, without detaching any tendons.

Dr. Bagsby employs the direct anterior approach for his total hip replacement to reduce recovery time, improve functional outcomes, and enhance patient satisfaction.  He also received extensive training to perform partial knee replacement, which, in appropriately selected patients, is associated with better functionality, fewer complications, and has a 2.7x higher patient satisfaction rating. Additionally, Dr. Bagsby has revised numerous hip and knee replacements for varying causes, including pain, infection, loosening, and instability.

While Dr. Bagsby has worked extensively in the Midwest, he is now happy to call North Carolina his home.  He moved to Clayton and Smithfield to join his wife, Dr. Elizabeth Bagsby, who also works for EmergeOrtho. Outside of work, he greatly enjoys the outdoors and is an avid weight lifter, runner, and cyclist.
